The common ones

Starting out

My child is shy and has never done a sport. Will they be lost?

No. Taekwon-Do is an individual sport done in a group environment — every student works at their own rank and their own pace, and instructors correct one student at a time. Beginners start in a beginner line with beginner expectations.

Shy kids tend to do well here precisely because nobody is passing them the ball and nobody is watching them fail in front of a crowd.

Is this a good fit for a child with ADHD?

It's one of the most common reasons families come to us. Classes are built out of short, high-attention blocks with an immediate, visible result — you kick the target or you don't. Rules are stated plainly and enforced consistently, which is how kids build strong, healthy boundaries.

We are instructors, not clinicians, and we don't make medical claims. What we can tell you is what parents tell us about homework and mornings.

My child is being bullied. Will martial arts make it worse?

The first tool we teach is posture, voice, and eye contact — the things that stop most bullying before it becomes physical. Students learn that the techniques are for defending themselves and others, never for starting something, and that standard is enforced on the mat.

Tell us what's happening when you come in. We've handled it before and we'll handle it quietly.

Do I need to be in shape first?

No prior fitness, flexibility, or coordination is required. You get in shape by training, not before it. Adults regularly start with us in their thirties, forties, and fifties having done nothing athletic in years.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

It depends entirely on the student — how often they train, how they test, and what they bring to the floor. Some move quickly, some take longer, and we don't judge either one. What we will do is tell you honestly where you stand at every rank.

Can parents watch class?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and observe any class. Plenty of parents watch for a few weeks and then end up on the mat in the adult program themselves.

What does the $49 intro actually include?

Thirty days of classes in the program that fits your age and goals, plus a starter uniform to keep — a $284 value. There is no long-term contract attached to the intro, and no obligation at the end of it.

What are the class times?

Class times are set by age group and rank, and they shift with the school calendar, so we keep the current schedule off the public site. Request it with the form on this page and we'll send you the schedule for your age group along with the web special.

The new program

Boxing

Is my kid going to get hit in the head?

Not on day one, and not as a rite of passage. Beginners don't spar — they learn stance, footwork, and how to defend before anyone throws anything at them. Contact is introduced gradually, in full gear, and only when a coach decides a student is ready for it.

Plenty of students train for fitness and skill and never spar at all. That's a legitimate way to do this, and nobody here will push you out of it. If you want the specifics for your child's age, ask us when you come in.

What age can we start?

Roughly twelve and up for the boxing class. That's a guideline rather than a wall — we've had younger students train well, and we've turned away older ones who weren't ready. Bring them in, let a coach watch them for a class, and we'll give you a straight answer.

For younger children, the kids Taekwon-Do program is usually the better starting point, and it builds most of the same foundation.

Is this boxing for fitness, or for fighting?

Both are welcome and neither is required. The class is built as real boxing instruction — the technique is the same whether you ever step through the ropes or not. Most people are here for the conditioning and the skill.

If you do want to compete, tell a coach and they'll tell you honestly what that road looks like.

Do we need to buy gloves and wraps first?

Not to try. Call the front desk before your first class and we'll tell you exactly what to bring and what we can lend you — it's a short list, and nothing needs buying before you know you like it.

How is this different from the Taekwon-Do program?

Different tools, same standard. Taekwon-Do is a traditional art with a rank system, forms, and a character curriculum built into testing. Boxing is a narrower, deeper skill set: hands, head movement, footwork, and conditioning, with no belts attached.

They complement each other unusually well — Taekwon-Do students who box tend to develop much better hands, and boxers who train Taekwon-Do stop ignoring everything below the waist. Plenty of people do both.

The practical ones

Logistics, cost, and gear

What's the difference between Taekwon-Do and karate, jiu jitsu, or MMA?

Taekwon-Do is a traditional Korean martial art built around kicking, striking, forms, and self-defense, with a formal rank system and a stated code of conduct. Jiu jitsu is primarily grappling on the ground. MMA is a competition format that blends styles.

If you want a complete traditional art with a character curriculum attached, this is that. If you want cage fighting, we'll point you somewhere else honestly.

What do we need to buy to start?

Nothing, to try. Uniforms are available to borrow for a trial class, and the $49 intro includes a starter uniform to keep. Sparring gear comes later, at the rank where sparring starts, and we'll tell you well in advance.

Is there a contract?

The 30-day intro has no long-term contract attached and no obligation at the end of it. Ongoing membership options are explained in person, in plain numbers, once you know whether you want to keep training.

How often should we come?

Two classes a week is the pace most students progress well on. Three is better if the schedule allows. One is enough to keep a beginner moving forward, and we'd rather you come once a week for a year than three times a week for a month.

Do you run birthday parties or school demonstrations?

Ask us. Call the front desk at 813-350-9400 and we'll tell you what we have availability for.

Where exactly are you, and is there parking?

3605 Henderson Blvd, South Tampa, FL 33609 — minutes from Palma Ceia, Hyde Park, Bayshore, and Plant High School. There's free parking in front of the school.
